*REMAKE OF AN 8-YEAR-OLD SKETCH* Once upon a time *REMAKE OF AN 8-YEAR-OLD SKETCH* Once upon a time, when I was expecting my little boy Joshua, I had a mission. I was determined to create the most magical nursery for him, a room where we could retreat for happy little stories for us to share together. But as I wandered through shops, something curious happened… nothing I found quite had that *spark*. So, out came the dusty paints and pencils from my old days as a fashion illustrator and I started to sketch and paint. Swipe to see that first sketch from eight years ago! Back then I wanted to bottle up that feeling I had as a child, flipping through the enchanting pages of Rien Poortvliet, Anton Pieck, and Elsa Beskov's books. And whilst I was painting, something extraordinary happened... as I drew, my baby started kicking. It felt like our first conversation, a secret language only the two of us understood. That’s when I knew—I wanted to continue to do this for the rest of my life: Drawing up little tales of gnomes, fairies, or perhaps a curious family of mice…A place where anything was possible. A few year later, I revisited my "Home Sweet Home" illustration, ready to spark your adventures. Peek closely... see that little chimney puffing smoke? Because honestly, wouldn’t you want to spend your days feeding deers, hedgehogs and squirrels in the middle of a magical autumn forest? But alas, I settled on something a bit more poetic... I'm Iris Esther, proud mom of two, forever-engaged to my amazing Robin, daydreamer and early morning person. 2. I have a magical talent for finding keys around the house, except for my own... 3. One of my happiest childhood memories? Wednesday afternoons in a little town called Baarn where two local artists taught children the art of self-expression. With hands in clay, wooden hammers and chisels shaping wood, Monica's place was where anything felt possible. Although she passed away when I was 11, her endless enthusiasm and unwavering belief in the power of children’s fantasy continue to inspire me till this day. 4. Growing up, I was all about climbing trees. Now, I’m trying to convince Robin to build a treehouse '𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯.' 😉 5. I’ve had a wonderful career as a fashion stylist, but motherhood completely changed my outlook on life, revealing the beauty in small things. It also became the starting point of a new creative journey—one where my art began to reflect the magic of childhood imagination. 6. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d love to run three times a week, I would have laughed. Now, I dream of conquering a half marathon! (Yes, I said that out loud on the internet... 😂) 7. Thanks to YOU, what once felt like an impossible dream—living through my art—has now become a reality. Your support has turned my tubes of paint into possibility. My beloved Perpetual Calendar is back in stock after being absent for almost half a year. This never-ending calendar is a long kept wish and became a walk down memory lane, a nod to the warmth of my beloved grandmother. The calendar, a personal tribute to a wonderful childhood memory, takes residence in the comforting embrace of my ‘oma’s little private sanctuary. A cozy retreat where, as a little girl I found solace in staring at the pictures of her birthday calendar, as my imagination unfolded with each visit. I’d like to think of this calendar as an ode to the vanishing art of slowing down. I hope it will call us to reconsider the constant companionship of our phones when stepping into these little spaces. Of course, not all calendars will find their way into the smallest rooms of our homes.
