Of all the fairytales collected by the Brothers Grimm, The Star Talers has always felt like one of the most hopeful. It tells the story of a poor girl who gives away everything she owns, only to discover that kindness and generosity are never truly lost. Instead, the stars themselves reward her goodness.
In this illustration, the young girl stands barefoot in a woodland clearing as golden stars begin to fall from the evening sky. Around her, a rabbit, a hedgehog, and a watchful owl quietly witness the moment. The forest glows with soft light as the heavens seem to open above her, capturing the magical heart of Grimm’s beloved tale.
When I painted this piece, I wanted to celebrate the sense of wonder I felt when first reading The Star Talers. It is a story that reminds me that even in difficult times, kindness matters. The woodland setting, the gentle animals, and the shower of golden stars were all painted to evoke that feeling of hope, gratitude, and possibility that lies at the heart of the story.
This artwork is perfect for children’s rooms, reading nooks, nurseries, seasonal displays, and anyone who loves fairytales, folklore, and storybook-inspired art.

I’m Iris Esther, an illustrator and mother of two, creating illustrated art, art prints, postcards, and small paper goods from my forest-side home studio. With a green birdhouse in the first tree outside my window, I work guided by nature, fairytales, changing seasons and by a deep love for making art by hand.
Growing up, being outside wasn’t a destination but a way of living. My art grew from that same gentle rhythm.
My illustrations are made to quietly support everyday life — bringing a sense of enchantment to family celebrations, seasonal rituals, and small moments that matter.
