When the fields grow still and the last leaves loosen from the trees, a girl walks back to the scarecrow who has kept watch since spring. All summer he stood quietly among the rows. Now, in the golden light of early evening, just before the first frost settles in, she comes to say goodbye.
And in that fading light, something unexpected unfolds. The scarecrow bends slightly, as if waking from his long stillness, and together they turn in a slow, gentle dance. Leaves circle around them. The field holds its breath.
I drew this little fairytale after reading The Wizard of Oz to my daughter — imagining what might happen if a scarecrow, faithful and patient, were given one small moment of movement before winter.
“The Scarecrow’s Dance” is a postcard about parting and promise — about the quiet companionship of a season, and the soft assurance that what rests now will return again.
A tender piece for autumn correspondence, seasonal tables, or to keep as a reminder that even in ordinary fields, stories are waiting. Also available as an art print, you can find here.

I’m Iris Esther, an illustrator and mother of two, creating illustrated art, art prints, postcards, and small paper goods from my forest-side home studio. With a green birdhouse in the first tree outside my window, I work guided by nature, fairytales, changing seasons and by a deep love for making art by hand.
Growing up, being outside wasn’t a destination but a way of living. My art grew from that same gentle rhythm.
My illustrations are made to quietly support everyday life — bringing a sense of enchantment to family celebrations, seasonal rituals, and small moments that matter.
