This illustration was created as a celebration of the worlds children build from almost nothing —and the quiet courage that lives inside their play.
In the golden calm of early autumn, a young knight steps into the meadow. His cloak lifts in the breeze, his carboard helmet sits slightly crooked, and in his hand he carries a noble steed made of wood and wool. Beside him trots a loyal companion, dressed as a dragon — green wings fluttering, eyes bright with trust. A robin rests upon the lance, as if offering its blessing for the journey ahead.
My Dragon and I was created in honour of Michaelmas — the Waldorf festival that celebrates bravery, balance, and the strengthening of inner light as the days grow shorter. It is a story of courage that is gentle rather than loud, and of imagination that turns the simplest things into entire worlds.
This piece is for you if you cherish childhood play that is rooted in nature, rhythm, and meaning. If you love the Waldorf way of marking the seasons, and the belief that courage is learned through play, trust, and companionship. It belongs on a seasonal table, in a child’s room, or anywhere you wish to honour the quiet heroism of growing hearts.
Let My Dragon and I remind you that bravery does not always roar.
Sometimes, it walks softly across a meadow —
with a dragon at its side,
and a song of courage carried in its chest.

I’m Iris Esther, an illustrator and mother of two, creating illustrated art, art prints, postcards, and small paper goods from my forest-side home studio. With a green birdhouse in the first tree outside my window, I work guided by nature, fairytales, changing seasons and by a deep love for making art by hand.
Growing up, being outside wasn’t a destination but a way of living. My art grew from that same gentle rhythm.
My illustrations are made to quietly support everyday life — bringing a sense of enchantment to family celebrations, seasonal rituals, and small moments that matter.
