This illustration was created for the turning point of the year —the moment when the light begins to find its way back.
In the quiet edge of early spring, when winter has not yet loosened its grip and the forest still speaks in whispers, a small mouse appears. In its paws, it carries a walnut candle — not to keep, but to give. Carefully, it places the candle boat upon the water, sending it drifting outward, back into the world. A simple act. A brave one.
This piece is for you when the days have been long, when the dark felt heavy, or when you have been holding your light close, unsure if it was time to share it again. Candle Mouse reminds us that the return of the light does not arrive all at once. It begins with a gesture. A flame set free. A promise quietly kept.
This illustration was created as a small ritual in itself — a way of honouring Candlemas, the soft Waldorf festival of early spring, and the ancient knowing that we are caretakers of light, not owners of it. What we tend with care, we may give back to nature when the time is right.
Place Candle Mouse where you welcome the season’s turning — near a window, a seasonal table, or a place where you pause. Let it remind you that even the gentlest light, helps the world grow brighter again.
And that spring always comes back and begins this way.

I’m Iris Esther, an illustrator and mother of two, creating illustrated art, art prints, postcards, and small paper goods from my forest-side home studio. With a green birdhouse in the first tree outside my window, I work guided by nature, fairytales, changing seasons and by a deep love for making art by hand.
Growing up, being outside wasn’t a destination but a way of living. My art grew from that same gentle rhythm.
My illustrations are made to quietly support everyday life — bringing a sense of enchantment to family celebrations, seasonal rituals, and small moments that matter.
