The Bremen Town Musicians by the Brothers Grimm has always been one of my personal favourites. As a child, my mother often read the story aloud from a large red-orange fairytale book, and I can still remember the feeling of listening to the adventures of the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster as they set off in search of a new life.
In this illustration, the four famous musicians stand together beneath glowing windows, lifting their – some would argue- glorious voices into the evening air. Warm lantern light, cobbled streets, and little musical instruments helped me to bring the beloved fairytale to life. But hidden within the story is something deeply personal: the cat in this painting was inspired by my own beloved cat, Bob. I wanted to give him a forever-place within one of my favourite childhood fairytales, making this artwork especially meaningful to create.
What I have always loved about The Bremen Town Musicians is that it is a story about friendship and finding your place in the world, no matter your age or circumstances. It reminds us that sometimes the most unlikely companions can become family.
Perfect for fairytale lovers, cat lovers, children’s rooms, reading nooks, music rooms, and anyone who treasures the timeless stories of the Brothers Grimm.

I’m Iris Esther, an illustrator and mother of two, creating illustrated art, art prints, postcards, and small paper goods from my forest-side home studio. With a green birdhouse in the first tree outside my window, I work guided by nature, fairytales, changing seasons and by a deep love for making art by hand.
Growing up, being outside wasn’t a destination but a way of living. My art grew from that same gentle rhythm.
My illustrations are made to quietly support everyday life — bringing a sense of enchantment to family celebrations, seasonal rituals, and small moments that matter.
